 IsoSoft Solutions Frequently Asked Questions

Our team has initial discussions with hundreds of people a year. While no two projects are alike, many of these introductory conversations include similar questions.

We've listed some of the preliminaries below in hopes of saving visitors to our site valuable time.

You say IsoSoft likes impossible projects...what do you mean by "impossible?"

We're made up of a group of creative types; the proverbial kids that got mediocre grades in high school because they weren't being challenged.

We like to work with innovators, so R&D projects are good example. With that in mind, we realize that not every project that requires our level of expertise is completely whitespace. Our clients often partner with us to integrate custom systems into an enterprise environment.

How much will my project cost?

It depends on the complexity of your project. Integrations with outside systems or third party products, or just as importantly, the intent to integrate your system with outside systems or third party products, has a major impact on the complexity of the project and therefore the cost.

IsoSoft's development philosophy is to design extensible systems; or systems that can be expanded and integrated with later on. You may not need an enterprise system built out of the gate, but as your company grows and the demands on your system expand, you need software that can expand with you, not a one-trick-pony that has to be torn down and re-built from scratch to accommodate an integration.

There are very few custom development projects that take less than 160 hours of labor, or about a month's worth of man-hours.

Do you build websites?

Parts of them.

We are usually called upon to connect and secure data that is displayed on the web; medical data, instrument readings, financial outputs and so forth. There are many good companies out there who focus on User Experience (UX), graphic design, Flash, style sheets etc. We'd be happy to make some recommendations if you need help in the aesthetic trades.

Our goal is to handle the plumbing of these sites.

Is IsoSoft a staffing company?

No.

We are a project-based company made up of a core design team, augmented by a network of trusted specialists who we've worked with for thousands of hours over many years. Our towering strength and our main offering is complex design and integration. There are only so many people on Earth who can handle the kinds of projects we take on.

We are a strike force; not an army.

How do you bill?

On a retainer, which is then billed against on a Time & Materials basis. Similar to a lawyer.

We bill this way to lower our risk and thus, keep our hourly rate reasonable. It also lowers engineer attrition and maintains our bandwidth. IsoSoft guarantees payment to its team and this billing model allows us to keep our brain trust and specialized talent in place for the long haul.

Some software companies bill on a Net 30 and only receive their final payment until after the final deliverable is implemented. We can understand how this would appear to be an attractive model.

Nothing against our contemporaries, but these companies also charge $200 to $300 an hour. Companies using this model don't consider losing that final 20% a major risk, because they've already made a profit by the time the project gets to that point.

We want to invest our money in top talent and ongoing training, not collections.

We do NOT work on fixed bids, which works to your benefit as well because you only pay for actual work. Positive retainer balances at the end of projects are either applied as a credit to other projects or refunded in full.
